AFCON 2025: Davido’s High-stakes Wager Fails as Super Eagles Fall
Nigerian music superstar Davido has suffered a hefty financial loss after the Super Eagles were beaten by Morocco in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) semi-final, costing him a ₦75 million ($50,000) bet he had confidently placed on his national team to prevail.
The semi-final match, played on January 14, 2026 at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat, ended in a 0-0 draw after regulation time. Morocco went on to win 4-2 in a penalty shootout, knocking Nigeria out of the tournament and dashing Davido’s hopes of a big bet win.
Before kick-off, the Afrobeats star shared a screenshot of his betting slip on social media, showing he had wagered $50,000 (about ₦75 million) on a parlay that required Nigeria to win within 90 minutes, both teams to score, and the match to feature more than 1.5 goals. None of these conditions were met, leading to the bet’s failure.
Had the bet been successful, it carried odds of 6.97, meaning Davido stood to win more than $348,000 (roughly ₦522 million). Instead, the goalless draw and subsequent shootout loss wiped out his stake — a stark reminder of the risks of high-stakes sports betting.
Morocco’s victory propelled the host nation into the AFCON final against Senegal, while Nigeria’s campaign came to an end. The Super Eagles will now contest a third-place playoff — a match that follows the team’s semi-final exit.
Fans reacted to the news with a mix of sympathy and humour online, reflecting on both Nigeria’s defeat and the financial gamble. Some pointed out the unpredictability of football, especially in knockout matches decided by penalties, while others debated the wisdom of placing such large bets.
For Davido, the loss wasn’t just monetary — it symbolized his passionate support for the Super Eagles and the emotional investment many fans place in their teams during major tournaments like AFCON.
