Nation Mourns the Passing of Popular Giant Known as Awuche
Ghana is mourning the death of Sulemana Abdul-Samed, popularly known as Awuche, who was widely recognised as the country’s tallest man. He reportedly passed away at the Tamale Teaching Hospital after battling serious health complications linked to gigantism. He was 33 years old.
Awuche rose to national and international prominence after his extraordinary height drew widespread media attention. Although he was once reported to be over nine feet tall, later measurements confirmed he stood at approximately 7 feet 4 inches, with doctors explaining that he continued to grow due to gigantism (acromegaly).
“That is how Allah chose it for me. I am okay with how God created me,” Awuche once said while speaking about living with his condition.
In recent weeks, Awuche’s condition had deteriorated significantly after developing a severe infection in his left leg. Doctors initially recommended amputation to prevent the infection from spreading, but that decision was later reversed following further medical assessment after businessman Ibrahim Mahama pledged to finance his treatment.
Despite efforts to improve his condition, reports indicate that Awuche passed away while receiving treatment at the Tamale Teaching Hospital. The exact cause of death has not been officially disclosed.
Awuche became a symbol of resilience for many Ghanaians.
