Sista Afia Opens Up About Choosing Secular Music Over Gospel
Ghanaian singer Sista Afia has revealed that members of her family were disappointed when she decided to pursue secular music instead of gospel music due to their strong Christian background.
Speaking in an interview, the singer explained that growing up within the famous Duncan-Williams family came with expectations that she would eventually become a gospel artiste.
“They didn’t expect me to be a secular artiste but rather a gospel artiste,” Sista Afia reportedly stated.
Sista Afia, born Francisca Duncan Williams Gawugah, is related to renowned Ghanaian preacher Nicholas Duncan-Williams, one of the country’s most influential religious leaders.
According to her, while some family members were uncomfortable with her decision to enter secular music, Archbishop Duncan-Williams himself has never personally complained about her career or songs.
The singer also clarified that she has never hidden her connection to the Duncan-Williams family but prefers not to constantly speak about it publicly.
Sista Afia further explained that her family’s deep religious upbringing shaped many expectations around her life and career path. However, she ultimately chose to follow her passion for music despite the initial disappointment.
The award-winning artiste has since built a successful career in Ghana’s music industry, releasing popular songs and collaborating with major acts including:
- Shatta Wale
- Sarkodie
- Kelvynboy
Her comments have sparked conversations online about family expectations, religion, and the challenges entertainers face when pursuing unconventional career paths.
