Ghana’s Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has given more than 700 newly qualified doctors a strict seven-day ultimatum to report to their mandatory rural postings or face serious consequences.
The directive follows alarming reports that only about 30 percent of the graduates have so far honored their postings, with some regions recording zero compliance. The minister described the situation as unacceptable, especially in deprived areas that have long battled acute shortages of medical personnel.
The policy, which channels roughly 80 percent of newly trained doctors to district and rural health facilities, is part of a broader government strategy to correct the severe urban-rural imbalance in healthcare delivery.
Official figures show that nearly half of Ghana’s doctors are concentrated in the Greater Accra Region alone, leaving northern and other rural zones critically under-served. Authorities insist the rural posting system is the most practical way to ensure equitable access to quality healthcare across the country.

Public reaction has been sharply divided. Many Ghanaians support the government’s push for patriotism and equitable distribution of scarce medical expertise, pointing to the massive GHS 6.9 billion the state has injected into the sector, including the addition of 13,500 new nurses and midwives to the payroll in 2025.
Others, however, argue that coercion alone will not solve the problem and could accelerate brain drain. Critics are calling for tangible incentives such as free accommodation, hardship allowances, and official vehicles to make rural service more attractive.
