DJ Slim Jerry is shaping Afrobeats’ next wave
Veteran Ghanaian DJ and cultural tastemaker DJ Slim Jerry is turning up the heat this summer with the release of ‘Abonteen’, a vibrant new record that blends Afrobeats energy with the evolving pulse of Afro House.
Known for helping shape New York’s Afrobeats scene over the past two decades, DJ Slim Jerry — born Jerry Adu — has built a reputation as one of the Bronx’s most respected Ghanaian DJs, consistently connecting African music culture with global audiences.
With Abonteen, he channels that experience into a track designed for movement, nightlife, and celebration. Named after the Akan word for “outside,” the song captures the same free-spirited energy that fuels festivals, parties, and the now-global Detty December culture.
Over the years, DJ Slim Jerry has shared stages with some of Africa’s biggest music stars, including:
- Stonebwoy
- Shatta Wale
- R2Bees
- Prince Bright
- Tinny
- Obrafour
- DJ Tunez
- Kizz Daniel
These collaborations have helped position him as a cultural bridge between Ghana, New York, and the wider Afrobeats movement.
But Abonteen goes beyond celebration — it also hints at DJ Slim Jerry’s growing interest in blending Afrobeats with Afro House influences, creating a sound that reflects both West African nightlife and the musical energy of the Bronx.
Speaking about the song, DJ Slim Jerry described Abonteen as:
“A love letter to every soul who lives for the moment.”
He added:
“‘Abonteen’ is for anyone who knows what it feels like when the warmth hits and it’s time to step outside for a ride. That fizzy energy is bottled up in this song.”
With its infectious rhythm, feel-good melodies, and festival-ready atmosphere, Abonteen is already positioning itself as one of the standout Afrobeats records of the season.
As Afrobeats continues to dominate arenas from Madison Square Garden to The O2 Arena, DJ Slim Jerry is proving that he is not simply following the movement — he is actively helping shape where it goes next.
