Yaw Sarpong passed away in Kumasi, reportedly at Emena Hospital, where he had been receiving medical care as he battled ongoing health challenges.
Widely regarded as one of Ghana’s most influential gospel musicians, Yaw Sarpong rose to prominence as the leader of Yaw Sarpong & Asomafo, a group known for rooted Christian lyrics, disciplined harmonies, and contributions that shaped modern Ghanaian gospel music.
Over his decades-long career, Sarpong and Asomafo produced a number of iconic gospel songs that have become staples in churches and worship services across Ghana. He was honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2025 Telecel Ghana Music Awards in recognition of his impact on the industry.
