Rex Omar Takes Legal Action Against Akosua Agyapong Over Defamatory Statements

Renowned Ghanaian musician Rex Owusu Marfo, also known as Rex Omar, has taken legal measures against fellow veteran highlife artist Akosua Agyapong. In a letter sent by Rex Omar’s legal representatives, Akosua Agyapong is accused of making defamatory remarks about their client and other executives of the Ghana Music Rights Organisation (GHAMRO). Rex Omar, who has been serving as the Board Chairman of GHAMRO since 2017, was alleged to be operating unlawfully and without proper legal authority.

In a recent statement, Akosua Agyapong urged the Attorney General’s office to close down GHAMRO, claiming that the organization’s license had not been renewed due to ongoing court issues. She stated that certain individuals had taken the interim management committee to court, and the judge had ordered them to step down until new elections were conducted.

Additionally, she raised concerns about GHAMRO’s financial management, citing information from the organization’s 2021 annual report. She alleged that funds intended for the welfare of musicians were mismanaged, resulting in inadequate assistance for those in dire need. Agyapong also questioned the allocation of funds, including expenses related to refreshments, sitting allowances, and the purchase of new cars and computers.

Rex Omar’s legal team vehemently denied these allegations, denouncing them as baseless, false, and unfounded. They accused Akosua Agyapong of damaging their client’s well-established reputation by making malicious and irresponsible public statements without any evidence or legal justification. The lawyers argued that Agyapong’s statements had harmed Rex Omar’s reputation, caused emotional distress, and resulted in financial losses.

In their letter, Rex Omar’s lawyers demanded that Agyapong publicly retract her defamatory statements and issue an unconditional apology within 14 days. They also insisted that she refrain from making any further false and malicious public statements against their client. Failure to comply with these demands could lead to legal action, seeking substantial damages against Agyapong.

While Rex Omar’s legal team acknowledged the previously amicable relationship between their client and Agyapong, they expressed hope for a peaceful resolution without resorting to adversarial measures. However, they stressed that if Agyapong failed to comply with their demands, they would utilize all available legal means to compel her to retract her statements and issue an apology.
