Kobina Ansah Advocates Nationwide Theatre Development in Ghana
Renowned Ghanaian playwright and theatre producer Kobina Ansah is urging a nationwide expansion of live theatre in Ghana, stressing that many people outside Accra have never experienced a stage play. He believes that making theatre accessible across all regions is crucial for growing the performing arts industry.
According to Ansah, who spoke to Graphic Showbiz on January 6, 2026, this effort should begin by constructing small-capacity theatres in every region. In the meantime, he says town halls and community centres can be used as performance spaces to bring theatre closer to local audiences.
Ansah called on the National Theatre of Ghana and production houses to adopt an intentional strategy that will ensure more plays are shown not just in Accra but across the country. He believes that many Ghanaians in rural and regional areas have never seen live theatrical performances and deserve the opportunity to experience the art form.
The push for nationwide theatre aligns with broader efforts to strengthen performing arts in Ghana, especially as the National Theatre builds audiences and showcases dramatic arts through festivals and touring productions.
