FC Barcelona in European Champions League: history of greatness and new ambitions

FC Barcelona in European Champions League

FC Barcelona enters the new European Champions League 2026/27 season with the kind of ambition only a handful of European clubs truly understand. The Catalans boast one of the tournament’s most remarkable records: five continental crowns and a reputation built on thrilling, attacking football. Yet since they last lifted the trophy in 2015, another Champions League triumph has remained out of reach.

FC Barcelona has made a promising start to the season, cruising to a 5-1 victory over Feyenoord in its opening match and showcasing its superior quality, impressive combination play, and confidence. It may be too early for loud statements, but it is an encouraging sign ahead of a long campaign.

Follow the season with 1xBet, FC Barcelona’s official partner, which stays at the heart of the biggest moments in European football.

Place in history

FC Barcelona’s first European Champions League triumph came in 1992, when Johan Cruyff’s side lifted the trophy at Wembley after Ronald Koeman’s iconic free kick against Sampdoria.

It marked the beginning of one of the most significant eras in the club’s history. Fourteen years later, FC Barcelona claimed the trophy again, this time under Frank Rijkaard with Ronaldinho leading the way. Barça’s later success came during the Pep Guardiola era, led by the Argentine GOAT alongside Xavi and Iniesta. The last coach to guide the Catalans to the trophy was Luis Enrique, with his legendary MSN attacking trio.

Those seasons featured one of the greatest generations football has ever seen, with FC Barcelona setting the standard and turning finals into spectacular shows.

Journey since 2015

Since its last triumph, the Catalan giant has faced a challenging transition, marked by a generational shift, squad rebuilds, and several painful exits in the decisive stages, including against Roma in 2018 and Liverpool in 2019.

FC Barcelona remained a regular among Europe’s elite but struggled to match the previous decade’s success. The 2024/25 season marked a major step forward under Hansi Flick, with the team coming within touching distance of the final. In a dramatic, high-scoring semifinal tie, Inter eventually prevailed 7-6 on aggregate.

New ambitious generation

FC Barcelona enters the new season with a more mature, balanced squad than a few years ago, combining players with experience in major European matches and homegrown talent from the legendary La Masia academy.

Raphinha remains a key figure in attack and an important part of the team’s system. Rodri, who joined the club this summer as the World Cup’s best player, brings valuable experience. The multimillion-euro signing of Anthony Gordon further underlines the scale of Flick’s ambitions.

This blend of talent allows FC Barcelona to enter the new European Champions League campaign without relying on a single star. The approach is traditionally built around a strong team structure, academy graduates, and combination play rather than one player.

Chapter still to be written

For FC Barcelona, the pursuit of European glory always comes with massive expectations – that is part of the club’s stature and the weight of its history. The 2026/27  season gives this generation another chance to achieve what the side has not managed since 2015: reclaim the title of European champion.

Can this FC Barcelona side add a new triumphant chapter to its history? One thing is certain: the team is ready to battle, giving fans reason to believe their Champions League drought might finally end.
