Headies 2026 Postponed 18th Edition Moves From October to April 2027 in Toronto

The 18th edition of The Headies will no longer hold this month. Organisers of Nigeria’s biggest music awards have pushed the Toronto ceremony from October 23, 2026, to April 10 and 11, 2027, a move announced on Saturday, October 10, that has left many fans, nominees and ticket holders asking questions.

The update was shared on the awards’ official Instagram page, less than two weeks before the show was meant to take place in Canada. Toronto remains the host city, but the main event is now about six months away.

Why The Headies 2026 Was Moved

According to the statement, the organisers want more time to expand their activities in both Nigeria and Canada before the grand finale in Toronto.

They also said that “Road to The Headies” activities will continue during the original event window, so the awards will not go completely quiet in October. More details on the programme are expected through the Headies’ official channels.

The organisers did not give any further reason for the change.

An apology to guests

The team acknowledged that some people had already planned their trips. “To guests who have already made travel plans and other arrangements, we sincerely apologise for the inconvenience,” the statement read, as reported by Legit.ng.

It closed with a short note of thanks: “Thank you for your patience and continued support.”

Quick Facts

  • Old date: October 23, 2026
  • New dates: April 10–11, 2027
  • Host city: Toronto, Canada
  • Theme: “Africa to the World”
  • Most nominated act: FOLA, with 10 nominations

How Fans Reacted

The news drew mixed reactions online. Some fans were frustrated, especially those who had already paid for tickets.

“For those of us that already bought the event tickets, why have we not received an email yet for refund?” one user, @houseofbeau_t, asked under the announcement.

Another fan, @prolifick5, was blunt: “This is actually a very anyhow movement you knew you couldn’t keep to the date.”

Not everyone was angry. @abiolavj100 defended the organisers, writing that this was probably “not an easy decision to make.”

Some commenters guessed that travel documents for guests coming from Nigeria could be part of the problem. The organisers have not said this, so it remains fan speculation.

A Big Year for the Nominees

The postponement means nominees will have to wait longer to find out if they have won. When the nominations were unveiled on August 25, 2026, there were 213 nominations across 35 categories, according to Channels Television.

FOLA led the pack with 10 nods. Omah Lay followed with eight, while Mavo and Wizkid had seven each. Davido and Asake each earned six, and Ayra Starr and Tiwa Savage led the women with five each.

Album of the Year race

The Album of the Year category is one of the most talked-about. It features FOLA’s Catharsis, Omah Lay’s Clarity of Mind, Erigga’s G.O.A.T, Wizkid’s Morayo, Odumodublvck’s The Machine Is Coming, Tiwa Savage’s This One Is Personal and Burna Boy’s No Sign of Weakness.

The Best Male Artiste list includes Adekunle Gold, Asake, FOLA, Mavo, Rema, Wizkid and Burna Boy. Ayra Starr, Qing Madi, Sewa, Tems, Teni and Tiwa Savage are up for Best Female Artiste.

In Next Rated, a category many see as a launchpad for rising stars, Fido, FOLA, Llona, Mavo and Shoday are in contention.

Background: The Road to Toronto

The Toronto plan was first revealed in June 2026 at “The Big Announcement” event at Eko Hotels and Suites in Lagos. There, Headies founder Ayo Animashaun told guests, “The first thing is that we’re going to Toronto for the 18th Headies,” Channels Television reported.

He also promised that fans at home would still be part of the night. “We’re not leaving Nigeria behind. We’re going to have a watch party,” he said, explaining that a Lagos watch party would run alongside the Toronto show.

This is not the first time the awards have gone abroad. The Headies held two editions in Atlanta, Georgia, before returning to Lagos for the 17th edition.

What Happens Next

For now, the organisers say more information on the venue, programme and other arrangements will be shared before April 2027. Ticket holders will be watching closely for clear word on refunds or transfers, which the statement did not address in detail.

The longer wait gives nominees more time in the spotlight, but it also puts pressure on the Headies to deliver a show worth the delay. Fans will be hoping the April dates hold firm.
