From Judge Koboo to Edziban: A Career That Made Ghana Laugh
For many Ghanaians, Kwame Dzokoto will always be Judge Koboo. His role in Efiewura, the popular TV comedy series about landlords and tenants sharing one compound house, made him a household name.
He later became the face of Edziban on TV3, a food and tourism programme that explored Ghanaian dishes and local eating spots. The show brought small chop bars into living rooms across the country, and fans still link him to it.
He also appeared in Osumesi and worked in comedy and advertising voice-overs. Away from the screen, he built a radio career with Skyy Power FM in Takoradi and Hello FM in Kumasi.
A Move Into Politics
Dzokoto later turned to politics. He contested the Tarkwa-Nsuaem parliamentary seat on the ticket of the NDC in the 2016 general elections but did not win. He remained active in the party and continued to speak on radio panels in the Tarkwa area.
Health Concerns in Recent Weeks
His death comes only weeks after photos of him looking unwell went viral on social media, sparking concern among fans.
In September 2026, Dzokoto publicly dismissed rumours that he had died. Speaking on B.E. TV, he said plainly: “I’m not dead.” According to GBC, he said at the time that he had been battling high blood pressure and diabetes and had undergone surgery abroad with support from businessman Ibrahim Mahama.
He was also believed to have made one of his last public appearances on September 8, 2026, at the launch of The 70 Slate film project at Omanye Hall, Labadi Beach Hotel, Accra. The project is led by filmmaker Shirley Frimpong-Manso. Fans who saw him at the event noted that he looked very different from the man they remembered on TV.
His situation echoes the health struggles some other veteran actors have spoken about recently, including Kofi Adjorlolo, who explained that he was not well when he missed a recent movie project.
Fans React to the Sad News
Tributes poured in on social media as the news spread. Many fans remembered how Edziban made ordinary food joints famous, while others recalled the laughter he brought as Judge Koboo.
One fan wrote under a post shared by GhanaWeekend: “Edziban Aa Didi….made every chop bar famous.” Another simply wrote: “Oh may he rest peacefully.”
His death adds to a painful list of Ghanaian actors who have passed away over the years, and it comes as the industry continues to mourn other creative figures such as gospel legend Yaw Sarpong.
A Life Spent Entertaining Ghana
Kwame Dzokoto’s story is one of range. He was an actor, a comedian, a TV host, a radio voice and a politician, and in each role he kept a close connection with ordinary Ghanaians.
Fans are now waiting for his family to share details of the funeral. For now, Ghana remembers Judge Koboo, the man who made a nation laugh and showed it the joy of local food. Rest in peace, Kwame Dzokoto.
