Patience Ozokwor
Veteran Nollywood actress Patience Ozokwor has explained why she was missing from the funeral service of screen legend Olu Jacobs in Lagos. The actress, popularly known as Mama G, said she was in Ghana on work duty and could not break her contract to travel home for the farewell, adding that missing the day “hurts” her heart.
Her message, shared on Instagram on the day of the service, has touched many fans who have followed the long goodbye to one of Nigeria’s most respected actors.
Why Patience Ozokwor Missed Olu Jacobs’ Funeral
In her post, Ozokwor made it clear that staying away was not her choice. She said her work commitments in Ghana simply would not let her leave.
“It hurts my heart that I am not physically present in Nigeria today to pay my last respects to the great legend, Olu Jacobs,” she wrote. “I would give anything to be there right now, but contractual obligations will not allow me to.”
She also sent her love to the family and colleagues who gathered in Lagos, saying: “My heart and thoughts are with you all.”
“Go Well, Great Legend”
The actress prayed for a peaceful service and said Jacobs’ legacy would live on. “Though I may not be there in person, please know that I am with you all in spirit,” she added.
She closed her tribute with a farewell in English and Igbo: “Rest well, great legend. Your legacy will forever remain. Go well, great legend. Ga nke Oma. Until we meet to part no more.” The Igbo phrase “Ga nke Oma” means “go well”.
What Is Keeping Mama G in Ghana?
Ozokwor did not name the project in her post. However, she was among the Nollywood stars who landed in Accra on Wednesday, September 30, to shoot Lil Win’s new film, A Journey to Africa.
The Ghanaian actor and filmmaker brought in a strong Nigerian cast for the movie, including Kanayo O. Kanayo, Destiny Etiko, Mike Ezuruonye and Zubby Michael. Their arrival created a big buzz on both sides of the border.
The production has also been in the news for other reasons. Lil Win recently said he was losing sleep over the balance he still owes the Nollywood stars on the project.

How Lagos Said Goodbye to Olu Jacobs
The family announced a two-part farewell for the late actor. It began with a Night of Tributes on Wednesday, September 30, at Glover Memorial Hall on Lagos Island, where guests were asked to dress in shades of blue.
That evening, top names in the industry shared stories about the man many called a father figure. You can read more about how RMD, Funke Akindele and Kate Henshaw led the Night of Tributes.
The funeral service followed on Friday, October 2, at This Present House in Lekki Phase 1, with mourners asked to wear shades of green. Family members, friends, fellow actors and industry figures filled the church to honour him. Reports say he was later laid to rest in a private cemetery in Lagos the same day.
A Wife’s Quiet Grief
Much of the attention during the funeral events was on his wife, veteran actress Joke Silva. The couple were one of Nollywood’s most admired marriages, and images of her grief during the funeral service moved many fans online.
Who Was Olu Jacobs?
Olu Jacobs was one of the most respected faces in African film. He built his early career on stage and screen in Britain before returning home to become a pillar of Nigerian cinema.
With his deep voice and calm, powerful presence, he became a favourite in Nollywood for decades. He often played kings, chiefs and fathers, and many younger actors have described him as a mentor and father figure.
His death on September 16 at the age of 84 drew tributes from fans, colleagues, politicians and even foreign missions.
Patience Ozokwor: A Nollywood Icon
Patience Ozokwor is herself one of Nollywood’s best-known stars. She became famous for playing strict, scheming mothers and mothers-in-law, roles that made her a household name across Africa.
In recent years, she has shown a softer side to fans on social media and continues to act in big projects at home and abroad. Her trip to Ghana for Lil Win’s film is another sign of the growing partnership between the Ghanaian and Nigerian film industries.
Final Word
Patience Ozokwor may not have been in Lagos, but her message showed that the loss of Olu Jacobs is felt far beyond the church walls. As she continues work in Ghana, her farewell joins a long list of tributes to a man whose work shaped African cinema. Go well, great legend.
