The news first circulated through a Facebook video by KDI Media, in which the presenter mourned the lawyer and urged viewers to pray for his family.

GBA Ashanti Confirms William Kusi’s Death

The Ashanti branch of the Ghana Bar Association announced the passing of its member in a statement signed by its secretary, Shadrack Obeng-Yeboah.

“With a heavy heart and deep sorrow, I announce the death of our member, William Kusi, Esq.,” the statement read.

The association asked lawyers to reach out to his family and his colleagues at Dominion Chambers. It also extended condolences to his loved ones and prayed for his soul to rest in peace.

According to GhanaWeb, which cited MyNewsGh, he died in Germany after a heart attack. Details about the exact date of death and funeral arrangements have not yet been made public.

The Lawyer at the Centre of the Daddy Lumba Marriage Battle

Lawyer Kusi rose to national attention after the death of highlife legend Daddy Lumba, born Charles Kwadwo Fosu, in July 2025. He led Akosua Serwaa’s case at the Kumasi High Court, where she asked to be declared the late musician’s only surviving lawful spouse.

Her claim rested on an ordinance marriage she said she contracted with Daddy Lumba in Germany in December 2004. Kusi consistently argued that the marriage was still valid because it had never been dissolved.

The dispute pitted Akosua Serwaa against Odo Broni, the mother of several of Daddy Lumba’s children, and split fans into rival camps online. Odo Broni has since kept her own public tributes to the late singer, including a donation to Korle Bu to mark his posthumous 62nd birthday.

The High Court Ruling and Appeal

On November 28, 2025, the Kumasi High Court dismissed Akosua Serwaa’s bid to be recognised as Lumba’s only legal wife. The court recognised both women as customary wives but did not accept the German marriage document she presented, reportedly because it was an extract rather than an original certificate.

Kusi did not hide his disagreement. Speaking to GhanaWeb at the time, he described parts of the decision as “scandalous” and declared, “We will prosecute and appeal.”

“I am a learned person, and I can’t align myself with decisions which are scandalous and I cannot defend,” he said then.

The appeal was later filed at the Court of Appeal in Kumasi. In January 2026, Kusi reportedly spoke publicly about threats against him and his family after he chose to pursue the appeal, according to YEN.com.gh.

Lawyer Kusi Beyond the Courtroom

Outside the Lumba case, Kusi was known as a family law practitioner and ran Dominion Chambers in Adum, Kumasi.

He was also active in politics. GhPage and YEN.com.gh report that he was a strong supporter of former Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong and a visible campaign figure for him in the Ashanti Region during the NPP’s internal contests.

Tributes Pour In for William Kusi

Odeneho Kwaku Appiah, identified by GhPage as the NPP’s Ashanti Regional Chairman, mourned the lawyer on Facebook.

“Lawyer Kusi, may your gentle soul rest in perfect peace. You will forever be remembered. Amen,” he wrote.

In her tribute video, the KDI Media presenter described him as “one of the best family lawyers that Ghana has ever produced,” calling him a “nice gentleman.”

Many social media users also shared messages of shock and sympathy, with some sending prayers to Akosua Serwaa and the lawyer’s family.

What It Means for Akosua Serwaa

Kusi’s death comes while Akosua Serwaa’s appeal remains pending. Reports in June 2026 indicated she had engaged a new lawyer for the appeal, and it is not yet clear what role Kusi was playing in the case at the time of his death.

Neither Akosua Serwaa nor her family has publicly commented on his passing as of the time of writing.

The news adds another sad chapter to a story that has dominated Ghanaian showbiz since Lumba’s passing, even as fans prepare to celebrate his music at the Daddy Lumba Memorial Concert on December 19.

Halmblog will update this story when the family or Dominion Chambers announces funeral arrangements.
