What Chita Agwu Said

In the statement, titled “A Personal Announcement,” the actress made it clear that the divorce is final. She wrote that “my marriage has been legally dissolved by the court.”

She described the end of the marriage as the close of one chapter and the start of a new one, which she said she is entering “with peace, grace and dignity.”

No Details About Why the Marriage Ended

Chita did not say what led to the divorce, and she made it clear she will not be drawn into public debate about it.

“I will not be sharing private details or engaging in public discussions” about the circumstances surrounding the divorce, she wrote.

She also said people going through such changes deserve to move forward without judgment, ridicule or public humiliation. She thanked everyone who has supported her and said she is focused on healing and personal growth.

“I Choose Peace Over Controversy”

One line from the statement has been widely shared by fans online: “I choose peace over controversy, healing over bitterness.”

She ended the message on a hopeful note: “My marriage has ended, but my life continues.” She added that she is moving forward “with my head held high, my dignity intact.”

How Chita Agwu and Johnson Maduabuchi Met

The couple’s relationship was well known on social media because of how fast it moved. According to a report by WithinNigeria, their story began on Instagram.

Johnson reportedly saw Chita in a movie, looked her up online and sent her a direct message to compliment her. At first, he claimed to be from Anambra State, before later admitting that they were both from Uburu in Ebonyi State.

The two reportedly spoke online for about two weeks while he was abroad. When he returned to Nigeria and they met in person, he proposed just four days later.

A Whirlwind Romance Fans Loved

The couple held their traditional wedding on October 25, 2014, followed by a white wedding in June 2015.

In late 2022, Chita opened up publicly about their quick romance while defending DJ Cuppy’s own fast engagement. Her story was shared widely as proof that a short courtship can still lead to marriage.

In a 2023 interview, she described her then-husband as “heaven-sent.” That is part of why the divorce news has caught many of her followers off guard.

Fans React to the News

Since the statement went public, the news has been picked up by several outlets in Nigeria and Ghana, including Pulse Nigeria, The Sun, Ripples Nigeria, P.M. News and GhanaWeb.

Many fans have sent the actress messages of support and praised the calm tone of her announcement. Others have recalled the couple’s viral love story and said they were saddened to see it end.

So far, Johnson Maduabuchi has not publicly commented on the divorce.

Another Celebrity Marriage Makes Headlines

Chita’s announcement comes during a busy few weeks for celebrity marriage stories in West Africa. In Ghana, the public split between Bishop Daniel Obinim and his wife has also dominated conversations, with Florence Obinim’s lawyer giving reasons for the divorce as the bishop mocked her demands.

Unlike that case, Chita has chosen not to explain her side in public. Her decision to keep the details private has been welcomed by many fans, who say celebrities deserve space to deal with personal matters.

The news also adds to a busy period for Nollywood stars in the spotlight, as the industry continues to generate conversation online both on and off the screen.

What’s Next for Chita Agwu?

Chita did not share any plans beyond focusing on healing and growth. For now, her message to fans is simple: she has moved on with dignity and wants the same respect for her former husband.
