AGN Mourns an “Iconic Actor”

The Actors Guild of Nigeria confirmed the death and paid tribute to its former interim leader. Speaking to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), AGN National President Abubakar Yakubu described Duru as “an iconic actor, a revered veteran and an exceptional practitioner.”

“Beyond his remarkable performances, he was a mentor and inspiration to generations of practitioners,” Yakubu said. “Indeed, Francis has written his name on the sands of time. His artistic legacy transcends generations.”

He added: “We mourn him, and we pray that God will grant the family the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss.” In a separate Instagram post, the guild wrote: “Another great thespian gone, rest in peace, Francis Duru.”

Colleagues and Fans React

Veteran actor Kanayo O. Kanayo was among the first colleagues to react, describing Duru as one of the “most flexible and prolific performers in Nigeria”

On social media, many fans shared memories of his work. One fan wrote, “I remember him most as Ahanna in ‘Rattle Snake’. An enormous talent,” while another simply said, “An era is ending. Only a few are remaining.”

Others described him as “a very jovial and down-to-earth guy,” reflecting the warm image he kept with fans over the years. The loss comes just days after Ghana’s movie industry also mourned Efiewura actor Kwame Dzokoto, making it a heavy week for West African screen fans.

From Cameroon to Nollywood Fame

Francis Duru was born in Cameroon to Nigerian parents from Imo State. He completed his primary and secondary education there before moving to Nigeria for university.

He studied Theatre Arts at the University of Port Harcourt in Rivers State and earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1996.

The Ahanna Breakthrough

Duru made his screen debut in 1989 in Missing Mark, directed by the late Ndubuisi Oko. His big break came in 1995 when he played Ahanna in Rattlesnake, the crime drama produced by the late Amaka Igwe.

The role made him a household name and remains one of the most remembered performances of early Nollywood’s pioneering generation.

A Career Spanning More Than 30 Years

Over more than three decades, he appeared in many films, including Blood Money, Mama Sunday, Total Control, Home in Exile, Mboputa, Stigma, The Good Husband, Lipstick and Mortuary Gate.

In 2007, he received a United Nations Ambassador of Peace award for his positive influence on young people. In 2010, he was appointed interim president of the AGN and earned a Best Actor in a Supporting Role nomination at the Africa Movie Academy Awards, the same awards whose 2026 nominations were recently announced.

Health Rumours Earlier This Year

Duru’s passing comes months after he dismissed reports that he was battling a serious illness. In June 2026, a video showing him looking frail circulated online and sparked worry among fans.

At the time, he responded in a video on his Instagram page, calling the footage “fabricated and malicious.”

A Family Already Touched by Loss

The actor’s death comes about two years after he lost his 15-year-old son, Ifeanyi, in August 2024. In emotional posts at the time, Duru called his son his “champ” and “lion,” and said he still thanked God despite the painful loss.

He is survived by his wife, Adokiye Duru, whom he married in 2003, and their children.

A Legacy That Lives On

For many Nigerians, Francis Duru will always be Ahanna, the bold young man whose story helped shape the early years of Nollywood. His work on screen, his service to the Actors Guild and his role as a mentor to younger actors will be remembered for years to come. Halmblog will share updates on funeral arrangements once the family announces them. Rest in peace, Francis Duru.
