Ghana has officially opened its 2026 festive season. At a launch held at the Labadi Beach Hotel in Accra on Tuesday, October 20, the Ministry of Tourism and the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) unveiled the calendar for December in GH 2026, revealing that more than 150 events have been registered across the country. Tourism Minister Abla Dzifa Gomashie used the occasion to send a clear message: the season must leave real money in the pockets of Ghanaians, not just good memories.
A Season Running From December 1 to January 3
This year’s December in GH runs from December 1, 2026, to January 3, 2027. It sits under the Black Star Experience, the government initiative that promotes Ghana’s culture, heritage, tourism and creative industries.
The programme is built around music performances, festivals, cultural exhibitions, heritage tours, food showcases, fashion events, arts and crafts, and community celebrations across the country.
Over 150 Events, More Than 100 in Accra
GTA Chief Executive Officer Maame Efua Houadjeto disclosed that over 150 events have been registered nationwide for the season, with more than 100 of them taking place in Accra alone.
Some of the biggest names in Ghana music have already locked in December dates. Songbird Gyakie, for example, has announced Gyakie Live at Ghud Park on December 12, her first headline show since 2022.
Gomashie: Judge the Season by Jobs, Not Just Excitement
The Minister for Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts made economic impact the centre of her speech. According to reports from the launch, she said, “The true value of December in Ghana must be measured not only by the excitement of the events,” stressing that the festivities should create jobs, strengthen local businesses and support sustainable livelihoods.
She listed the people she wants to see benefit, including content creators, booking agents, hoteliers, tour operators, food vendors, fashion designers, artisans, filmmakers, musicians and young entrepreneurs.
Gomashie also said the experiences visitors and residents enjoy during the season should strengthen Ghana’s image abroad and open doors that last well beyond December.
“Detty December” or “December in GH”?
The Minister also addressed the long-running debate over what to call the season. She acknowledged that “Detty December” is popular among young people, but urged stakeholders to spend less energy arguing over the name and more on showcasing Ghana’s culture, heritage and hospitality. The focus, she said, should be on getting people to experience Ghana.
The “Detty December” label is not unique to Ghana. Across the border, Lagos runs its own packed season, with stars like Wizkid confirming December homecoming shows in Abuja and at Detty December Fest in Lagos.
Service, Safety and Fair Prices
Gomashie called on tourism businesses to put service excellence, visitor safety and reasonable pricing first. She also encouraged organisers and visitors to look beyond Accra and promote tourism in all 16 regions of the country.
GTA Boss: Give Ghanaian Talent the Bigger Share
For musicians and performers, the strongest words of the day came from the GTA CEO. Maame Efua Houadjeto urged event organisers to give Ghanaian acts prominent slots and fair pay.
“Our musicians and creatives deserve opportunities that match their talents,” she said, as quoted by MyJoyOnline and Asaase Radio. She added: “Let Ghanaian talents form the greater share of your performing line-ups.”
She also encouraged organisers to source goods and services locally.
Ghana to Host Maiden African Festival of Arts and Culture
One of the headline events on this year’s calendar is the inaugural African Festival of Arts, Culture and Creativity, which opens on December 9, 2026. Ghana is hosting the festival in collaboration with the African Union Development Agency (AUDA-NEPAD).
The festival is designed to celebrate African creativity, strengthen cultural exchange and explore investment in the creative economy. Minister Gomashie first announced in August that Ghana would host the event.
Culturefest GH ’26 Also on the List
Another event named on the calendar is Culturefest GH ’26, set for December 24 to 26 at the W.E.B. Du Bois Memorial Centre for Pan-African Culture in Cantonments, Accra. Under the theme “Canvas & Rhythm: Where Art Meets Sound,” it will feature art, crafts, fashion, food, music and an artisan market.

Why It Matters
December has become Ghana’s busiest entertainment window, drawing members of the diaspora and international visitors to concerts, beach parties and festivals. With the 2026 calendar now out, the government is signalling that it wants the season to be measured by jobs created and local businesses supported, not only by crowds and viral moments.
For artistes, promoters and fans, the next few weeks will show which big shows join the calendar and whether organisers answer the call to put more Ghanaian talent on the stage.
