A Storyteller’s Set, Not a Regular Concert Act
Maame Dokono did not come to the stage with a typical musical set. Instead, she delivered the kind of performance that made her a household name, mixing songs, chants and folktales.
She was dressed in a white headwrap, a white embroidered cloth draped over her shoulder and a blue wrap skirt. Red LED screens behind her added to the atmosphere as she moved through her set.
The high point came when she started a call-and-response segment drawn from By the Fireside. Many of the patrons, who grew up watching the programme on GTV, responded line for line, turning the moment into a shared trip down memory lane.
What Is 100DegreesX?
100DegreesX is built around the partnership between a DJ and an MC rather than a long list of performing acts. The event is hosted by Kabutey Ocansey, known as Kabutey My Mc, and DJ The Wuushman.
Friday’s show was the second edition of the event. The maiden edition was staged at the National Theatre in October 2025.
Why By the Fireside Still Means So Much
By the Fireside was a children’s educational and entertainment programme on GTV that combined folklore with music and dance. Alongside Maame Dokono, it featured characters such as Wofa Yaw and Dr. Rokoto.
For many Ghanaians raised in the 1980s and 1990s, the show was a weekly ritual. It taught moral lessons through stories and songs and is still widely remembered as one of the country’s most loved children’s programmes.
According to YEN.com.gh, Maame Dokono has spoken in the past about her wish to bring the programme back to television.
Maame Dokono Performance Sparks Childhood Memories Among Fans
Social media users who watched clips from the night shared warm messages about the veteran entertainer, many of them recalling their childhood.
“Those shows were more than entertainment,” one user, onlyurss2, wrote, also suggesting that fans contribute towards a gift for her.
Another user, ej_fiesty, compared her to a popular children’s educator, writing: “Ms. Rachel for Ghanaian 80s and 90s kids. The best.”
Others were simply happy to see her again. “What a blessing to witness this once more,” babylu_germany commented, while withalvin__ wrote: “I so love this. Good to see her again.” Another fan, jacquiasante, summed it up as “Our childhood days.”
A Busy Season for the Veteran Actress
The stage appearance comes about a month after Maame Dokono was honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Pete Edochie Legacy Project gala on October 4, 2026. The award was presented to her by Hon. Maxwell Boakye, YEN.com.gh reported.
She has also been visible at major industry gatherings in recent weeks, including the farewell service for the late actress Grace Nortey at the State House, where she joined other colleagues to pay their last respects.
In September 2024, Maame Dokono marked her 80th birthday and 60 years in acting with a celebration and the launch of her memoir, Unforgettable Maame Dokono, as reported by Graphic Online.
Veterans Still Winning Hearts
Her return to the spotlight adds to a growing list of moments celebrating Ghana’s older generation of entertainers. Recently, actress Adwoa Smart was gifted a fully furnished apartment by Maame Gold after floods destroyed her home, a gesture that also drew wide praise from fans.
For a crowd of young adults in East Legon, Maame Dokono’s set was more than a guest appearance. It was a reminder of the stories and songs that shaped their childhood, and it has renewed calls from fans to see By the Fireside back on screen.
